HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT BACKPACK FOR YOU AND YOUR CAT

Choosing a backpack can be stressful and overwhelming. You want to make sure it is a backpack that will be sturdy enough to hold your cat, while also making sure they enjoy it. But you also want to make sure it is comfortable for you, as you’re the one who will be wearing it on the hikes! Here are a few things to consider when choosing the best backpack, keeping both you and your cat in mind.

Choosing a backpack:

          For you
  1. Padding
    1. Padded back and shoulder straps will be most comfortable, especially on longer hikes
  2. Safety straps
    1. Some backpacks come with chest and waist safety buckles. This could be a good idea on longer hikes or rougher terrain.
  3. Pockets
    1. Most backpacks will have side pockets for you to store some of your belongings in. If just are someone who takes lots of things with you, you may want to look into backpacks with more storage options.
  4. Structure/material
    1. This point is for you and your cat. Would you prefer a collapsible backpack that can be stored in smaller places, or a sturdier one that may take up more room? Keep in mind though, with a collapsible one, it could fold in on your cat slightly, making them feel less comfortable. Also, it may be too flimsy for them to stand on when trying to look out, or ride on top of if they prefer that.
  5. The activity
    1. Just like how different shoes are better in certain situations, same goes for cat backpacks. If you go on shorter, easier hikes, you will probably not need as elaborate of a backpack as one going on a 10 mile hike up mountains. Also, if you are using the backpack as a travel transport, and not hiking at all, you may look for different qualities.
    2. Keep in mind what activity you will most likely be doing with your cat when choosing.
  6. Cost
    1. Many cat backpacks can get quite pricey. If you are unsure if your cat will enjoy it, maybe start with a cheaper one to gauge their interest and see if this is something you want to invest in.
    2. One thing to note though: sometimes a flimsier backpack can cause them to get tossed around a bit more, and give them motion sickness. Switching to a sturdier backpack may solve that problem.
    3. You do NOT need to go out and buy a $100+ backpack right away! If your cat enjoys it, you can invest in better backpacks later.
For your cat
  1. Size of cat and backpack
    1. You want to make sure the backpack you buy can comfortably fit your cat and that it is appropriate for their weight. They should be able to move and turn around inside of it.
  2. Multiple entry points
    1. Some cats do not like being lowered into the top of the backpack. Having an opening on the front of the backpack allows your cat to be able to walk into it on their own too.
  3. Windows and Air holes
    1. Most windows are mesh or plastic (like the bubbles). Windows are important to allow your cat to see out, or they could feel claustrophobic inside
    2. Air holes are important in allowing air flow through the backpack, so that it doesn’t get too hot inside for your cat.
  4. Tether strap
    1. This is for safety. When in the backpack, we recommend you keep your cat in a harness and clip them into the backpack. This way, in case they decide to try to jump out, they cannot, or if you take a misstep, your cat will be safely secured inside the backpack.
  5. Floor/Base
    1. The floor of the backpack should be hard enough to keep the shape of the backpack, but soft enough to be comfortable for your cat to sit in. Most come with a cushioned bottom, but if not, a blanket or towel could be added.
    2. Most backpacks have some sort of on-slip base underneath as well. This is best for your cat so that they can get into it easily when it is on the ground.
