Best Harnesses For Adventure Cats

We have been asked by many who are looking to get started with taking their cats outside what the best harnesses for adventure cats are. We have tried quite a few ourselves before finding what works best for our cats. We also asked some of our adventure cat friends for their opinions. Below is a list of the top recommendations we received, as well as some pros and cons on each. We hope that this list may offer some guidance in your search, or that the article at least helps you think of the important qualities you want in a cat harness.

Top 4 Things to Consider When  Getting a Cat Harness

Comfort

  • Of course you want your cat to be comfortable wearing the harness. Some cats will take more time to adjust than others. Typically, if your cat can move freely, walks normally, and does not scratch or bite at the harness while wearing it, they are most likely comfortable.

Design/style

  •  There are three main styles of harnesses (H-style, vest style, and jacket style). We recommend you try them out and see which is the best fit for your cat. Different cats prefer different styles.
  • Also, material of the harness makes a difference too, depending on the activity. For example, if you will be in/near water, you do not want a material that will get heavy when wet, as that is dangerous for your cat.
  • Check out our previous post on How To Choose The Right Harness For Your Cat to see the differences between the different styles!

Your cat’s size

  • Measuring your cat before purchasing a harness is a must! Check the size guide for the harness and take the appropriate measurements they have listed (chest, neck, belly, etc.). This will ensure you will have the best chance of getting a properly fitted harness, or at least one that can be adjusted to fit properly.
  • To ensure a proper fit, you want the harness to fit snug. Not too tight that it digs into them, but not too loose that it is easy for them to slip out. A general rule of thumb is to be able to fit two fingers under the harness.

“Escape-proof”

  • Keep in mind that MOST harnesses list themselves as “escape proof”. Take this with a grain of salt, as many times, a determined cat will get out of most things. Most of the time, cats slip out of harnesses by backing up out of them while you are in front of them. To prevent this from happening, try to stay walking next to your cat, and if they stop, do not tug on the leash. Let them come at their own pace, or if needed, carry them. Tugging on the leash will encourage them to plant their feet and slip out.
