MEET KITSUNE
My Adoption Story
Hello furriends! My name is Kitsune and I’m a small ginger girl with a big purrsonality! I was born on the island of St. Kitts and was rescued by a kind veterinary student during a rainstorm. She posted my picture on Facebook, which is how my future mom found me. I still remember the first day we met! It was during an adoption event. Future mom picked me up, so I licked her nose, then demanded I be put down. It must have been my charm because mom knew at that moment we were meant to be together.
I was 6 months old when mom took me home and she wanted to start training as soon as I settled in! I learned quickly that I really LOVE clicker training and learning fun new tricks! I know probably about 50 tricks in total now, if not more (I’m not the best at math), including foot stall, cop cop, skateboarding, and walking like a human. I have to really trust that mom won’t drop me sometimes, because some of our tricks require me to jump up and balance on her and she’s no muscle builder, but she hasn’t dropped me yet!
How I learned to ADVENTURE
Mom says that before we even met she wanted an adventure kitty to take on her adventures and share the world with. With my spunky and adventurous personality, she knew I would enjoy it just as much as her! We started with harness training; mom just put the harness on and I started wearing it around the house whenever she was home. It was actually kinda comfy! Soon we started going out in the yard to explore. I wasn’t a huge fan of being in the neighborhood; the sounds of cars and people freaked me out when I was young, but mom kept taking me out to build my confidence. One day she decided to take me with her on a hike to the bat cave! It was much quieter, and I loved every minute of it! There were so many rocks to climb and I felt like a huge mountain goat springing from rock to rock. Pretty soon I started going everywhere with her, including the outdoor burger restaurant, kayaking, and boogie-boarding! I really like being on the water and watching the fish!
My best cat friend is Makita and we have gone on a lot of adventures together. We climbed up a volcano and took our first kayaking trip together. We started our own hiking group called the Orange Cat Clan (all cat colors are welcome, we are just both orange) and we encourage other cats to go adventuring with us! She moved to England for this year and sends me lots of pictures of cool European pigeons!
This year, we moved from my island home and took an airplane to Canada! I looked out the window and could see all the clouds! Canada was cool, but I don’t think I really like the city life yet. Then we took a long road trip to Wisconsin so mom can finish her clinical year of vet school! Wisconsin is really pretty and has lots of nice hiking spots! Since I’ve only ever been on the island, the only season I know is summer, so it’s really confusing when mom talks about crunchy leaves and snow. I guess I’ll find out about all that stuff later this year!
Next spring, mom is taking me with her to Vancouver Island while she attends her friends wedding, which means I get to live it up in a hotel for a week! I can’t wait to go to British Columbia! I’ve seen so many pictures of other catventurers there and the mountains and clear water look so beautiful!
Our Advice
Our advice to new catexplorers is this: if you don’t feel comfortable in one environment, then try something easier and work your way up! We may have started in our yard, but it was loud and not super fun. It turns out, early on I preferred quiet and secluded areas to hike. With training and slowly building up distractions and sounds, we are working up to louder environments. I personally still prefer quiet and secluded areas and we are currently working on this ourselves.
I’m going to leave you with something my mom says about catexploring: I show my cat the world so that she knows what I mean when I say she means the world to me.
