Top Tips To Keep Your Cat Warm In The Winter
November 13, 2020
While outside on an adventure:
- Pick them up and wrap them in your jacket.
- Put a sweater or booties on them.
- Bring a blanket to keep in their backpack or for the car ride.
- Keep adventures short. In very cold weather, 30 minutes to an hour may be too long even. Also, watch your cat and read their body language and adjust the adventure based on how they are doing.
- Head home. There is nothing wrong with cutting the adventure short to keep your cat safe!
When inside your home:
- Keep your home’s thermostat set on a comfortable temperature, even if you are not home all day. Sometimes people may turn the heat off when they are gone all day, and that is fine if you do not have pets in the home. But if you do, it is best to leave it on to make sure they are warm and comfortable all day.
- Keep extra blankets around the house for them to snuggle up in.
- Leave the curtains open. This allows the sun to shine in and your cats can take advantage and sunbathe a bit inside.
- Adding more playtime can also help keep your cat warm, as the exercise will help keep their body temperature elevated.
- Consider adding a bit extra food for your cat if you are still taking your cat out for walks. In colder temperature, cats burn more calories, just like people, in order to keep their core body temperatures up. We recommend you speak to your veterinarian before changing or adding to their diet, as adding too much can lead to unwanted weight gain.
- Another thing to try with food would be heating it up a bit. You can warm up their canned food if you feed that to give a bit extra heat for them while they eat.
